All together, these essays form a guidebook to our favorite nearby natural spots. Individually, each essay is a personal, observational, reflective essay about the writer's unique experience at that spot.


Walking distance ranges from one minute to thirty, but each of these places can be walked to right from our very own SUNY Potsdam campus! 

Closer to school: 

  • The Barclay Street Dock by Nick Soles, one minute from campus. 

  • Lehman Park – Mia Iaccino and Mallory Allen (10’ walk) 

  • Cubley memorial park– Jenna Switzer (10’ walk) 

  • Ives Park Lily Spooner, Cameron Jefferson, and Tiara Palazzo-Cross--roughly a 20 minute walk from campus.  

  • Munter Trails Jayden Levitsky, Chloe Tiernanand Johnny Dandurand  within walking distance from campus but a little long, 20-25 minutes, parking spots in the Stewart’s lot on Maple St., over the bridge on the way to Clarkson.

Potsdam, NY is a town with many immersive nature scenes within walking distance from its downtownIf you’ve got transportation, the options open up.  However, with transportation, you can access a laundry list of sites, opening opportunities to explore St. Lawrence County and the Adirondack Mountains! 

Farther out: 

  • Postwood Park Beach- Cassandra Bolesh & Marceline Barnes -- 6 minute drive, 25 min bike ride, 1.5 hour walk *Town of Potsdam provides bussing to & from during the summer  

  • Nicandri Nature Center, Massena - Leah Howland -- 45 min drive north 

  • Lampson Falls- Brandi-Marie Williams, 30 minute drive west of Potsdam [link to her photos]

  • Azure Mountain- Orianna Cottenabout 45 minute drive east 

  • Wild Center in Tupper Lake – Jenna Switzer – about one hour southeast
